Our Latiné/Hispanic Heritage month fact of the day: Politician Julián Castro has been rising star in American politics. Castro is of Mexican descent and was born with his twin brother, Joaquin, in San Antonio in 1974. Castro credits his mother, a Chicana political activist, for his life in public service. He counted her influence as the reason why he and his brother, a U.S. Representative for Texas, are politicians. Castro was elected to San Antonio City Council in 2001 and ran for mayor in 2005, coming in second by a small margin of votes. His second mayoral campaign, in 2009, which followed a stint running his own law practice. Castro was reelected in 2011 and 2013. He resigned as mayor in 2014 after accepting President Barack Obama’s offer to become the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He served in the role until Obama’s term ended in 2017.
